LOWELL — A state trooper primarily serving Northwest Indiana has been named "Trooper of the Year" by Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter.

Trooper Dennis L. Griffin, a 5-year veteran of the Indiana State Police, received the high honor for setting an example through his hard work, initiative, dedication and commitment to serving the public on a daily basis.

In 2023, records show Griffin had 1,801 traffic contacts, 114 criminal arrests including 27 felonies, and 111 operating while intoxicated arrests.

He also investigated 79 crashes and had 455 police service contacts with motorists, all while working the late shift out of the Indiana State Police post in Lowell.

In addition, Griffin is a field training officer, a drug recognition expert, a recruiting liaison, and an instructor for standardized field sobriety tests and emergency vehicle operation on behalf of the Indiana State Police.
